Call for papers - Biometrics for biomedical applications

Guest Editor

Audrey Kah Ching Huong, PhD, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Malaysia

Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: August 25 2025

BMC Biomedical Engineering is calling for submissions to our Collection on Biometrics in biomedical applications. While biometrics—technologies that identify individuals through measurable biological traits—are often associated with security and forensic science, their potential in healthcare is vast and underexplored. This collection seeks submissions that highlight innovative uses of biometrics, such as skin disease detection through fingerprint analysis, gesture recognition in prosthetics, and iris recognition for diagnosing eye diseases. We encourage papers that showcase the development of new biomedical biometric devices as well as adaptations of existing technologies for healthcare applications.

Audrey Huong is an Associate Professor of Electronic Engineering at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, where she is actively involved in numerous innovation projects. She has received several awards and recognition for her work on self-care diagnostics, both international and local. She has collaborated with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Malaysia to improve patients’ foot care and with researchers from Japan and the US on skin oximetry. Her research interests include deep learning and computer vision in biomedical engineering, the design of medical imaging systems, and optimizing imaging technologies.

About the Collection

BMC Biomedical Engineering is calling for submissions to our Collection, biometrics for biomedical applications to bridge the gap between biometric technology and its possible impact on biomedical engineering. Biometrics, or biometric technologies, is the ability to recognize individuals based on measurable biological (physical and behavioral) characteristics and is most commonly found in the fields of security solutions and forensic science. These technologies are, however, also successfully deployed in the context of biomedical applications. Examples of their uses include skin disease detection from fingerprints, the integration of hand gesture recognition into prosthesis, and iris recognition for eye disease diagnosis and treatment.

This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.
