Evina Katsou, PhD, Imperial College London, UK

Prof Evina Katsou is a leading expert in Water and Environmental Engineering and Chair Professor at Imperial College London. She leads the Resilience & Sustainability group integrating advanced digital tools, AI, and data-driven models to pioneer sustainable and resilient solutions across water, wastewater, and other industrial sectors. She plays a key role in the Water Resilience strategy, contributing her expertise to shape strategies that improve water sustainability and resilience, particularly in the context of climate change adaptation and resource efficiency. This work involves integrating advanced data analytics, AI, and circular economy principles into water management practices to enhance resilience and sustainability. With a focus on AI-based water and environmental solutions, she has led over 45 R&D projects, coordinating and acting as Principal Investigator for 36 of them.

Prof Katsou has authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications, contributed to 12 book chapters, and delivered more than 250 presentations at international conferences. She is a member of the editorial board and has guest edited numerous leading journals, including Frontiers in Chemical Engineering, Discover Water (Springer Nature), Journal of Circular Economy and Sustainability, International Journal of Thermofluids, H2O Water, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Waste and Biomass Valorization

Her work significantly advances circular economy frameworks, greenhouse gases monitoring and mitigation strategies, and sustainability and resilience methodologies. Prof Katsou co-leads the Action Group on Intelligent and Smart Systems within the ICT4Water Cluster, chairs two working groups in Cost Actions, serves as co-chair of the IWA Small Water & Wastewater Systems Specialist Group, and is a key member of the drafting team for the new ISO standards on Circular Economy (ISO 59020). Such interdisciplinary work bridges sustainability, circularity, and resilience assessment methods, advancing pathways to net-zero emissions and supporting data-driven decision-making models across multiple sectors. Prof Katsou aims to contribute to WGIII’s mission in assessing the scientific, technical, environmental, and economic aspects of climate change mitigation.

About the Collection

Access to clean water and adequate sanitation remains one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century, directly impacting public health, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic development. This Collection aims to bring together research and solutions addressing water management and sanitation systems. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, the collection seeks to explore and promote sustainable practices, technologies, and policies that ensure equitable access to clean water and effective sanitation worldwide.

Topics accepted for submission include, but are not limited to:

  • Water purification
  • Water security
  • Water scarcity solutions
  • Clean water accessibility
  • Sanitation and hygiene
  • Climate change and water resources
  • Water pollution control
  • Wastewater treatment
  • Sustainable water use practices
  • Water management policies to improve water access

Contributions from diverse disciplines, including environmental science, engineering, public health, economics, and social sciences, are highly encouraged to ensure a holistic understanding of the issues and opportunities in clean water management and sanitation systems.
