Marcelo Freire, DDS, PhD, DmedSc, University of San Diego, USA

Dr Marcelo Freire is a clinician-scientist at the J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) and the University of California San Diego (UCSD) driven by a passion for unraveling the complex relationship between inflammation, chronic diseases, and the microbiome. With a background in dentistry and oral biology, Dr Freire focuses on the fascinating interplay between the oral microbiome and its far-reaching impact on overall health. By employing a wide variety of molecular genetics, immunological assays, and omics approaches, his laboratory discovers and characterizes bacterial/viral virulence determinants of inflammation in chronic diseases. In the laboratory, Dr Freire employs cutting-edge techniques like shotgun proteomics and high-throughput assays to dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying host-microbial interactions and the transition from physiological to pathogenic inflammation. His research has led to the development of the open-source Salivary Proteome database, providing the scientific community with invaluable resources to study the human oral proteome in both health and disease contexts. Ultimately, Dr Freire aims to leverage his discoveries to identify novel biomarkers for early disease detection and develop innovative diagnostics and therapeutics, transforming the way we approach chronic diseases and improving patient outcomes.

Zuzanna Ślebioda, DDS, PhD, Poznań University of Medical Sciences, Poland

Dr Zuzanna Ślebioda is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Surgery, Periodontology, and Oral Mucosa Diseases at Poznań University of Medical Sciences (PUMS) in Poland. She is a specialist in conservative dentistry and endodontics, an experienced academic teacher, and a researcher. She is a member of the Polish Dental Society and an Editorial Board Member of BMC Oral Health. Her field of research covers oral pathology, oral medicine, and diseases of the oral mucosa, with a special emphasis on the interactions between general health state and oral pathologies. She has co-authored over 50 full-text papers in international journals, and several conference abstracts.

About the Collection

BMC Oral Health is pleased to announce our upcoming Collection, Integrating oral and medical health care. The integration of oral and medical health care is an emerging field that recognizes the interconnectedness of oral health and overall systemic health. Historically, these two domains have been treated separately, leading to fragmented care that can compromise patient outcomes. This Collection aims to explore innovative approaches to integrating these two critical areas of health care, emphasizing the importance of collaborative care models that involve both dental and medical professionals.

Advancing our understanding of integrated care is crucial for improving patient outcomes and enhancing the efficiency of health care systems. Important advances in this area include the development of interprofessional education programs, which foster collaboration between dental and medical professionals, and the implementation of integrated care pathways that streamline patient management. Furthermore, studies have demonstrated that addressing oral health within primary care settings can lead to better health outcomes and reduced health care costs, underscoring the need for continued research and innovation in this field.

We invite submissions that explore various aspects of evidence-based dental research and practice, including but not limited to:

  •   Collaborative care models in oral and medical health
  •   Interprofessional collaboration in health care
  •   Impact of oral health on systemic health
  •   Integrated care pathways in primary care settings
