BMC Oral Health has published this Collection on New biomaterials for modern dentistry. The use of biomaterials in restorative and regenerative dentistry is of increasing research interest, with novel biomaterials demonstrating utility for restoring dental tissues, providing structural scaffolds for tissue regeneration, and providing alternative treatment options for oral diseases including periodontal disease and oral cancer.

Francesco Bennardo, PhD: School of Dentistry, Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro, Italy

Francesco Bennardo graduated in 2017 from the Magna Græcia University of Catanzaro with a degree in dentistry. In 2018, he obtained the Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Prosthesis and Digital Dentistry at the University of Naples "Federico II.” From 2019 to 2022, he was a PhD candidate in the PhD course in Life Sciences and Technologies at the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro. Since 2022, he has served as an Adjunct Professor of Restorative Dentistry at the School of Dentistry at Magna Græcia University of Catanzaro.
 

Artak Heboyan, MSc, PhD: Department of Prosthodontics, Faculty of Stomatology, Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi, Armenia

Artak Heboyan received a Bachelor’s degree in Stomatology from Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi (YSMU), Armenia in 2011 and a Master of Science (Qualified as Doctor of Stomatology) degree in Stomatology from the Faculty of Stomatology, YSMU, Armenia in 2013. In 2016, he qualified as a Medical Specialist in the field of “Prosthodontics,” YSMU, Armenia. From 2016 to 2021 he worked at the Central Clinical Military Hospital, Ministry of Defense, Republic of Armenia. From 2018-2021, he was an invited lecturer at The Center of Excellence in Dental Education at YSMU, Armenia. In 2021, Dr Heboyan defended and received a PhD in the field of Medicine (Stomatology) at YSMU, Armenia. From 2016-2021 he was an Assistant Professor. Since 2022, Dr Heboyan has served as an Associate Professor at the Yerevan State Medical University after Mkhitar Heratsi, Armenia. Simultaneously, he works as a Dentist-Prosthodontist at the “Art Classic Dent” Dental Centre. Currently, Dr Heboyan serves as a reviewer in various peer-reviewed journals and as an Editor in BMC Oral Health, Materials MDPI, Molecules MDPI, Journal of Applied Biomaterials & Functional Materials SAGE, Frontiers in Dental Medicine and many more journals. 

About the collection

BMC Oral Health has published this Collection on New biomaterials for modern dentistry. 

The use of biomaterials in restorative and regenerative dentistry is of increasing research interest, with novel biomaterials demonstrating utility for restoring dental tissues, providing structural scaffolds for tissue regeneration, and providing alternative treatment options for oral diseases including periodontal disease and oral cancer. 

The development of new biomaterials for medical applications requires a multidisciplinary approach, requiring collaboration between experts in material science, physics, chemistry, molecular cell biology, oral health, clinical practice, and surgery. In this Collection, BMC Oral Health collated multidisciplinary research across these fields in order to promote future collaborations that directly improve patient outcomes.

Furthermore, with the World Health Organization recognizing that the burden that poor oral health has on health care services worldwide is ever-increasing, notably in low- and middle-income countries, there is a clear need for more research into safe, effective, and affordable dental biomaterials with clinical utility in support of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3: Good-Health and Wellbeing and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.

For this purpose, BMC Oral Health welcomed submissions on a broad range of topics related to the development of new biomaterials for modern dentistry, including but not limited to:

  • New methods for manufacturing dental biomaterials
  • Studies assessing the biocompatibility, stability and mechanical properties of new biomaterials
  • Clinical models demonstrating the utility of new biomaterials for dental applications
  • Nanomaterials for oral applications, including the use of bio- and nano-coatings
  • The development and use of biomaterials for drug delivery in the treatment of oral health
